The ministry has written to mobile operators and internet service providers to immediately ban access to these mobile apps and websites.

According to the ministry, this step was taken because these platforms promote obscene, indecent, and adult content that has a negative impact on society.

The ministry presented the decision as part of its efforts to regulate digital platforms, making it clear that action will be taken against any medium that violates information technology rules and broadcasts objectionable content.

Earlier in April, the Supreme Court of India had directed the government to take concrete steps to control the increasing sexual content on over-the-top (OTT) and social media. At that time, the court had issued notices to major platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Ullu, ALT Balaji, X (then Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. It has been analyzed that the government has increased monitoring of objectionable content and taken restrictive action as part of the implementation of the same directive.
